Successful urban greening programmes have created an ecologically-friendly environment and transformed Nanjing into a comfortable, attractive modern city.

History

One of the four ancient capitals of China, Nanjing is a vibrant cultural centre. The city has attracted intellectuals from across the country for 2,500 years. In the Tang and Song dynasties, Nanjing was the place poets gathered for inspiration. While during the Ming and Qing dynasties the city was the imperial examination centre for the Jiangnan region.

This scholarly past has left a rich cultural heritage. Historical sites and ancient relics blend seamlessly with the modern city that is developing all around them.
